Postmortem

Successes

The project was completed and has fully functioning mechanics. Our team successfully limited the scope to a manageable degree at the beginning of the project and maintained a consistent work pace over the three week development period.

At release, the project included the following features:

  • Run, idle, and falling animations for the player character
  • Run, idle, and lay animations for Coco
  • Original artwork for assets and environment
  • Inventory system for collectibles
  • Enhanced player movement (Dashing, double jump, and wall climbing)
  • Full controller support for gameplay and menu interaction

Challenges

Along with success, we also had several failures. First, due to the shortage of time, we were unable to implement several features we originally wanted to have in the game, including usable items such as health potions. There was also a lack of thorough and comprehensive bug testing as we were still making changes to the game on the last day. We were not able to implement a death animation for the character as well. Additionally, mappings for the controller are ideal for only Xbox controllers. The in-game controls for the controller show mapping for the Xbox controller (specifically, Xbox One). Playstation and other controllers may have different mappings.

What We Learned

Throughout the development process, we learned a lot. We:

  • Gained experience and feedback in level design.
  • Learned how to draw pixel art and animate in Unity.
  • Implement a pause screen
  • Implement save points (respawn points) for the gameplay.

Possible Improvements

If we were given extra time, we would make the following improvements to the game:

  • Refined camera control
  • Add death animation
  • Add more game mechanics
    • Adding combat to the game (possible enemies and boss fights)
    • Damage/health system
  • More controller support

In the future, we also hope to improve scope management and ensure that our project is feasible within the given available time.
